The Bigfoot Murder
On July 9, 2022, Oklahoma resident Larry Sanders and his friend Jimmy Knighten were out “noodling” (fishing with bare hands) on the South Canadian River. While they were out, Sanders strangled Knighten. He claims he did it because Knighten had summoned Bigfoot to kill him. He said he feared that Knighten would leave him in the woods and that Bigfoot would eat him.
Sanders’s daughter told her mother that he confessed the murder to her. His daughter’s mother reported him to the police. Her daughter said that when Sanders came home from fishing, he was frantic. He said that Knighten had tried to kill him with Bigfoot, so he defended himself by strangling Knighten and then firing his pistol a couple of times.
The police were already looking for Sanders for a prior warrant on drug cases. When they arrived at his house, they said he appeared to be under the influence. It has been speculated that it was meth. There was a witness who said Sanders drove Knighten’s pickup truck home. When the police investigated it, there was what looked like blood on the tailgate and the bottom of the driver’s side door. They found a machete near the truck, which Sanders was known to carry.
Sanders was taken into custody on the outstanding warrant. He was questioned by the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation. Sanders claims that he found out Knighten’s plan and the two got into a fight. The fight escalated quickly and that’s when Sanders strangled his friend. He left Knighten’s body in the woods. During the interrogation, he confessed to the murder and drew a map leading to the body.
Knighten’s body was found on July 10th and was sent to the medical examiner for an autopsy. Sanders is being held without bond. The police are looking to charge him with first-degree murder. If convicted, he could face the death penalty.
